Sqeaks

Squeaks
By Sophia Liao

“Ha ha ha!” Chris laughed. “Get up, you loser!” As Jenny slowly pushed herself up again… *SLAP!* “You’re like, such a weakling,” Julie teased. “Ha ha ha!”
As the bullies walked out of the room, Jenny walked to the bathroom to wash herself up. How bad I felt for my poor little Jenny; the perfect daughter… I feel guilty for leaving her.
Jenny… a girl who was bullied by fellow orphans. Jenny… a 14-year-old orphan who had no friends. Poor, poor, Jenny. Don’t worry, my dear; mommy will come back for you!
“Jenny, time for breakfast,” Miss. Jessica said as she opened the door. “B-b-be right th-there,” said Jenny. “Are you okay?” Miss. Jessica asked. “Have those awful teenagers been making fun of you again?” Miss. Jessica was always so nice to Jenny… only she didn’t know that I, myself was Miss. Jessica. Yes, I have taken over a human’s body. I’m only doing this to protect Jenny!
“N-n-no, I’m fine,” She replied. Although it had taken a while to pick up the courage to speak to Miss. Jessica, they are starting to get along pretty well. Soon, Jenny, soon! You will be with mommy again!
As Jenny glumly walked down the stairs to the dining room, she heard a noise. Only she didn’t know it was my boots. “Squeak, squeak,” the noise went. Following her caused my boots to squeak. I have done this many times; I memorized how to change back into a human form and a transparent form. Jenny ran the rest of the way down the stairs. “It was just a rat,” Jenny told herself. “It was just a rat!”
Sure, poor little 14-year-old orphan Jenny was a blonde, but she did have fears. All the freckles on her face felt as if they were going to pop out any second now.
Jenny made herself to the dining room and grabbed herself a chunk of bread. On her way to her seat, Chris stuck his foot out and… -BAM- Jenny fell to the floor. The little 4-year-old orphans started messing with her long, blonde hair. “Squeak, squeak,” I went again. I was trying to help my poor Jenny. Only if she wasn’t so afraid…
Ashamed, Jenny picked herself up and went back to her room. “Squeak, squeak,” Oops, my bad. If only my boots would stop squeaking! Jenny got scared again, and ran up to her room; she shut her door on me. Silly girl, I can still get in, you know?
I went through her wall and watched her as she nibbled on the rest of her breakfast, not wanting to waste it.
Jenny lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling. “Mom, I wish you were here,” she said. “I really miss you.” “Oh, but Jenny, mommy is here!” I said. To prove it, I opened and shut the door. *Creeeeeeekkk….* Went the door.
The sound of wind whistled through her ears. “Squeak, squeak,” my boots went as I walked around the room. “Squeak, squeak.” “AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!” Jenny screamed. Quickly, I went back through the wall and changed form. As Miss. Jessica, I crashed into the door and ran up to Jenny.
“What is it?” Miss. Jessica asked. “What’s wrong? What happened?!” “GHOSTTTT!!!” Jenny screamed in reply, pointing to thin air.
“Oh, oh, oh, oh,” Miss. Jessica replied. “Don’t worry, dear, there’s not ghosts in orphanages.”
Chris, Julie, and the all the little bullies then came into the room. Seeing that Jenny was crying, they started pointing and laughing at her.
“Ahahahaha!” Chris laughed. “YOU’RE SUCH A BABY! GROW UP!” “Like, yeah. Like, what he said.” Julie said. The little ones just stood there, laughing their heads off.
A while later, everyone calmed down. “Come on, I didn’t finish my breakfast yet,” Chris said to Julie. “Let’s go back down. When we finish, we can all go outside for a nice walk…”
A perfect opportunity, I thought to myself.
When they left, Miss. Jessica told Jenny that she was going to be adopted today. “Finally,” Jenny thought to herself. “After all those interviews, I finally get to live somewhere nice and warm, with a loving family… Maybe. Maybe they might let me go to school again!
School. School, a place where students learn and do work. Jenny had never experienced that; she had always wanted to go to one. Jenny has always wanted to learn how to read and write.
“I’ll give you a few minutes while you pack up your stuff.” Said Miss. Jessica. “I will come back up to check if you need help with anything.” “O-okay, th-th-thanks,” replied Jenny.
“I finally get to live my life… a life without Chris and Julie, a life without nothing but bread… a life without…” “Squeak, squeak,” “Uhhh… right… must pack up…”
When Jenny was done packing up, she took her stuff and dragged it down the stairs. “Thump, thump, thump,” it went. Looking around, Jenny did not find anyone. “Where is everybody?” Jenny thought to herself. “M-miss. Jessica?” “Squeak, squeak,” a voice went.
“Squeak, squeak.” Jenny listened to where the noise was coming from. “Squeak, squeak.” It sounded as if it were behind her. “Squeak, squeak.” Jenny ran into the bathroom to wash her eyes out. “I could’ve sworn I saw a transparent figure with eyes… looking straight at me!” she said to herself.
She turned the faucet on. “Squeeeeaaaakkkkkkkkk.” There was no water, but Jenny still heard the sound of dripping water. She reached her hand out and stuck it under the faucet. She felt something really cold. It wasn’t the water… “It’s Fall, and there’s Fall wind,” Jenny reassured herself. “It’s just the wind, Jenny, it’s just the wind!”
Jenny rubbed her face and reached for a tissue. Something grabbed her by her and. “Aaahhhh!” she screamed. The transparent figure stood there, watching her. I tried to speak, “Jenny…” I tried to say. “GET AWAY FROM ME, YOU FREAK!” Jenny screamed. “AAAHHHH!” she ran back to the kitchen.
ON the counter, Jenny found a set of keys and a note. The note was written sloppily in dark, red ink. Not caring about the transparent figure anymore, Jenny picked the letter up and stared at it.

If only she knew how to read… Jenny took the note and the keys and went out to find Miss. Jessica. Walking on the streets alone, Jenny felt peaceful. She came to a stop sign. It said something else, too, but Jenny couldn’t read it. Strangely, all the letters on the sign were red, just like the note.
STOP, NO TRESSPASSING.
Jenny overheard a group of teenagers talking. The one with light brown hair, Jenny observed, asked, “What are you guys going to be for Halloween this year?” Another replied, “We’re not going trick-or-treating this year.” “Yeah,” said another. “We heard that every Halloween, on a full moon; a ghost will come upon a human and take its soul.” The second kid said, “Yeah, and besides, Halloween is for babies.”
Green light. Jenny walked down the block. Jenny gathered the courage to ask a man in dark, red clothing for instructions. He led her to a narrow passageway and left before Jenny could even thank him.
Good job, my dear. Leading our daughter to the wrong place. Bwahahahahaha!
Here, Jenny heard the sound of someone crying. Jenny followed the noise, and found that it was Julie. Jenny stared at Julie. “Why is she here?” Jenny asked herself. Jenny looked to the direction Julie was staring at. There was Chris… and little 4-year-olds. They were glued to a wall, each one with a red arrow coming out of there hearts. Then in red writing, it said,
I have come.
All of the sudden, it happened to Julie, too. Looking at the wall again, she saw Julie next to Chris, dead.
Jenny ran and found herself at a dead end. There was a sign… also in dark, red writing.
Hello, Jenny. It said.
Jenny noticed that the writing was getting easier to see now. Now that it was getting dark, Jenny could see that the ink… wasn’t really ink. It was… BLOOD. You could even see it tricking down the plastic sign now…
~Whoosh~ A gust of wind came buy. There was a distant cry in the air. “Help!” it said. Everything went quiet for a second. The voice grew fainter. “Jenny, help! Help me, Jenny!” it pleaded. “Help…”
Jenny couldn’t believe it, she slapped herself to see if she was dreaming. “You’re imagining things, Jenny, it’s just your imagination running wild,” she said to herself. “You’re hearing things!”
~Whoosh~ There goes the wind again, and more writing on the sign.
Jenny, you have failed mommy! Come to me, Jenny, I will bring you to where you belong!
“Squeak, squeak,” went a voice. Jenny found that she had fallen asleep. It was around midnight now… ~
~Whoosh~ The wing blew right through Jenny’s hair. Just that moment, Jenny saw the figure again. Jenny couldn’t believe her eyes. She pinched herself again. “Mom…?” Jenny asked. “Yes, honey, yes!” I said. “It’s me! Jenny, I missed you!” “I… missed you too, mommy…” Jenny said.
“Are you really real?”
“Yes, Jenny, yes, and mommy’s here to bring you trick-or-treating!”
“But mommy, I don’t have a costume or anything,” Jenny replied.
“Don’t worry, honey,” I said. “I’m bringing you to a friend’s house. She’s going to give you lots and lots of candy!”
The house that they visited was an old, gloomy, broken-down warehouse. They rang the bell. *Ding-Dong* Nobody answered the door. Using the key, Jenny stabbed it in the keyhole. It creaked open. Jenny felt a shove. She went into the room and the door shut instantly behind her.
“Mommy?” Jenny asked. Nobody answered.
The room was dark… Jenny slammed her fists on the door and starting banging on it. “HELP!” she cried.
Jenny looked around her. Red. The room was covered in dark, red objects. Everything was red. From floor to ceiling, and from wall to wall… The crates and teddy bears that were seen were also red. “How…?” Jenny asked herself. “Why…?”
A faint glow came from behind the crates. Jenny found herself staring at her mother’s body. Then Jenny remembered her mother’s death. She was with her, and her dad. It was raining hard, and they were all going for a drive. Jenny’s mom was going to buy groceries when suddenly…
It all happened so fast… Jenny’s mom died instantly. Nobody knows what happened to Jenny’s father, but she missed him dearly.
Now that Jenny thought about it… this street seemed familiar. She looked around again and saw that this house… was her house! But how did her mom’s body get here?
Examining her mother’s body, Jenny found another note. It read:
You belong here, Jenny, come back to mommy!
As Jenny stared at the note, a sudden noise came about the room. “Squeak, squeak.” Jenny’s mother’s body started moving. Jenny stared at the body. “Jenny…” the body whispered. “Jenny...!”
“LEAVE ME ALONE!” Jenny screamed.
“If this is all some kind of prank, STOP IT THIS INSTANT!”
-Silence.-
“ARGH!” The body dived at Jenny and cut her head off.
Several evil laughs were heard from miles away. “Bwahahahahaha!!” I said. Victory is mine.
